As mentioned, there were several questions, via the medium of text message, during our Pecha Kucha talk last week. The answers to these are below. For purpose of making sense of some of this, I was lying down during the talk:
1. Is the society influencing planning in the city?
Yes. NGS has an active interest in planning in Glasgow, and has a seat on the Glasgow Urban Design Panel. We also actively lobby where we think there are planning issues detrimental to the fabric of the city. You can see this in our recent response to the proposed Broomilaw developments. At the moment we're looking to maintain and expand on this aspect of the society, looking at imaginative ways to highlight planning issues to a broader cross-section of the public in Glasgow. Any suggestions or assistance in this direction would is greatly welcomed.
2. I know a good chiropracter if you need one.
Thanks. The back's fine though.
3. Can I borrow your jumper this weekend?
Sure, its a bit tight though.
4. Why, when Glaswegians are known for being gallus, are the city's recent buildings so generic?
A big question, but one worthy of further debate. I suppose we're most interested in what would represent a gallus approach to building? It could be argued that large 'statement' architecture (such as the transport museum) while architecturally distinct, are, on a global stage, generic in the mold of other statement and destination architectural sites, but 10-20 years too late. The symptoms you describe do ring true though, and there are probably several (many?) factors at play: not least regeneration through 'stylish' (but generic) building projects, the force capital exerts on planning decisions and possibly a lack of support for our more visionary architects and architectural projects. Over to you...
5. Where can I meet a hot guy?
At the New Glasgow Society.
6. Does you voice get deeper if you lie on the floor? It sounds like it does.
Yes.
