Event Details

The Alexander Thomson Society invited designers from around the world to submit innovative, imaginative and purposeful ideas for the reuse of Egyptian Halls. This exhibition is a showcase of the responses which were submitted. Egyptian Halls was completed in 1872 on Union Street by the celebrated architect Alexander ‘Greek’ Thomson. Despite its Category A listing, the majority of the building has effectively lain dormant for the last 40 years and, although structurally sound, has suffered damage through water ingress and lack of adequate or appropriate maintenance. A number of proposals have been developed for the building over the years, but none have been successfully delivered. The purpose of this competition and exhibition is not to form a feasibility study or develop an architectural approach, but to raise awareness of an important part of Glasgow’s architectural heritage which unfortunately is in a poor condition and at significant risk of further decay and possible demolition.
